Climber killed and another critically injured following 1,000-foot fall from Alaska mountain

A 52-year-old woman died and her climbing partner was seriously injured after falling about 1,000 feet off Mt. Johnson in Denali National Park. The incident happened on Thursday night while the team was climbing the “Escalator” route on the peak’s southeast face. Another climbing party witnessed the fall and informed park rangers. The surviving climber, a 30-year-old woman from California, was rescued by mountaineering rangers and taken to a hospital. Bad weather initially prevented the recovery of the deceased climber’s body, but it was eventually retrieved on Saturday. The deceased climber was identified as Robbi Mecus, 52, of Keene Valley, New York. Park officials expressed gratitude for the rescuers’ efforts and extended condolences to Mecus’ loved ones.
