CNN projects Democrats to win New York special election, temporarily reducing House GOP’s small majority

Democratic state Sen. Tim Kennedy won the special election for New York’s 26th Congressional District, narrowing the Republicans’ majority in the US House. He will replace Brian Higgins in the Buffalo-based district. Kennedy’s victory will reduce the GOP majority in the House to 217-213. Kennedy has represented the area in the state Senate for over a decade and will run in the June primary for the full two-year term. The 26th District is expected to remain Democratic-friendly. Kennedy’s win is the second consecutive special election victory for New York Democrats, bringing the state’s US House delegation to 16 Democrats and 10 Republicans.
