Columbia students protest for ‘divestment’ while university history of divestments is revealed

Columbia University’s pro-Palestinian student groups are demanding the school withdraw investment funds from companies profiting from Israel’s actions in Gaza. Led by Columbia University Apartheid Divest, students want funds withdrawn from weapons manufacturers and tech companies doing business with Israel. This isn’t the first divestment push at Columbia, with past movements including apartheid-era South Africa and private prison companies. Despite initial pushback, student activism at Columbia has successfully prompted divestment from private prisons and thermal coal. The university’s fossil fuel divestment policy was approved in 2021, showing the power of student-led movements in influencing institutional change.
