Columbia University Cancels Main Commencement Amid College Protests

Columbia University cancelled its large university-wide commencement ceremony due to pro-Palestinian protests. Instead, students will celebrate at smaller, school-based ceremonies. Columbia’s decision came after discussions with students and will save university president Minouche Shafik from delivering a commencement address in the area where a protest encampment was dismantled. Emory University also moved its commencement to a suburban arena. Universities across the country are dealing with protests related to the conflict in Israel and Gaza. Some have cancelled ceremonies or increased security. Students are urging divestment from companies linked to the conflict. Schools are responding with a range of tactics from amnesty to threats of disciplinary action towards protesters.
