Columbia University continues remote learning as protests over Gaza conflict persist

Columbia University has decided to continue remote classes for the remainder of the term due to tensions surrounding Gaza war protests that have escalated to US colleges nationwide. There were 133 arrests at New York University, with similar situations occurring at Yale and Harvard – the latter limiting campus access. Protests have spread to the US Midwest and West Coast, leading to arrests in Minneapolis, and campus closures. Antisemitic harassment has been reported near Columbia’s campus, prompting concerns for Jewish students. President Joe Biden condemned antisemitic protests and expressed support for Palestinians. The University of Michigan and other colleges are facing student demands to “divest from genocide” accusations related to Israel’s actions in Gaza.
