Congress passes TikTok ban with significant incentives for Democrats

A bipartisan effort in US Congress successfully passed a bill requiring TikTok to divest from its Chinese-owned parent company, ByteDance, within nine months to a year. The bill was part of a $95 billion foreign-aid package and contained a Democratic sweetener that allows Democrats to continue using TikTok for outreach to younger voters leading up to the 2024 presidential election. Despite opposition, the bill was passed with an extended timeframe for divestment. Critics believe Democrats will use TikTok as a political tool, while others believe the extension was necessary for a new buyer to secure a deal.
