ESPN’s broadcast of the 2024 Home Run Derby on Monday night took an unexpected turn following the national anthem performance by country music artist Ingrid Andress. Andress, a four-time Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, struggled noticeably with pitch throughout her rendition.

Performing the national anthem live in front of a national audience is undoubtedly a daunting task. However, despite this challenge, it was hard to overlook the issues in her performance. Fans and media personalities quickly reacted on social media, offering scathing reviews and vivid commentary on Andress’ attempt.

“My ears are bleeding. One of the worst national anthem renditions ever,” stated Houston Astros beat writer Michael Schwab.

“Is this a real national anthem at the derby? Holy s***,” commented Barstool Sports’ Frankie Borrelli.

ESPN’s Kayla Burton wrote, “This whole week really has me stunned.”

Matt Lindner of The Chicago Tribune expressed, “This is….the wildest version of the anthem I’ve ever heard. Like she sounds like a bad SNL sketch.”

Even players in the Home Run Derby seemed to notice the off-key performance. Philadelphia Phillies slugger Alec Bohm was caught on camera struggling to contain his laughter during the anthem. This moment reminded viewers of the 2018 NBA All-Star Game when many players were seen laughing during Fergie’s national anthem rendition.

The debate now arises over whose performance was more infamous: Fergie’s or Andress’. Ingrid Andress’ attempt may very well be giving Fergie a serious contender for the title of the most notorious national anthem performance in recent memory.
