Cowboys LT Edoga Out for Extended Period Due to Toe Injury

OXNARD, Calif. — Dallas Cowboys’ first-round draft pick, Tyler Guyton, finds himself on a fast track to securing a starting position following news that veteran left tackle, Chuma Edoga, has sustained a toe injury. This injury is expected to sideline Edoga as the regular season approaches, according to various reports.

Edoga suffered the injury during the initial quarter of the Cowboys’ preseason opening against the Los Angeles Rams. After the game, he was seen in a walking boot, and an MRI was conducted the following day. However, it remains unclear if surgery will be necessary.

In the game against the Rams, Guyton took to the field for 21 snaps. He expressed satisfaction with his performance, especially considering that a virus had hampered his practice time for nearly a week prior to the game.

“I thought I did pretty good, handled my business,” said Guyton post-game. “There are definitely things to improve on, but at least I got the butterflies out.”

The Cowboys are looking for Guyton to fill the shoes of eight-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith, who signed with the New York Jets during the offseason. Edoga was initially expected to take the majority of first-team snaps in training camp, but Guyton has also rotated in with the No. 1 unit at various points during practice.

Edoga’s last season was spent as a versatile player, starting six games at both guard and tackle for the Cowboys. He re-signed with the franchise in April on a one-year deal and was anticipated to serve as a crucial swing tackle behind Guyton and right tackle Terence Steele.

With Edoga’s injury, the role of swing tackle is now open, making way for Asim Richards and Matt Waletzko, who are considered the primary candidates for the position.

As training progresses, all eyes will be on Guyton as he steps up, potentially solidifying his role on the offensive line. The Cowboys coaching staff will undoubtedly be monitoring his development closely, as the team prepares for the challenges of the upcoming season.
