SEVENTEEN singer and producer WOOZI has addressed a British news article’s claim that the K-pop group employs artificial intelligence in their music recording process. The piece, published by BBC News, suggested that SEVENTEEN’s latest single, “Maestro,” reflected the group’s exploration of AI in music creation.

The article, titled “Will K-pop’s AI Experiment Pay Off?” highlighted AI-generated scenes in the song’s video and quoted WOOZI as saying that the group was experimenting with AI to stay abreast of technological advancements rather than opposing them.

However, WOOZI clarified his stance on his Instagram Story, stating, “All of SEVENTEEN’s music is written and composed by human creators.” Korean media outlet Newsis supported this, claiming that WOOZI’s comments were misconstrued. WOOZI explained, “I’ve tried writing and composing lyrics with AI. Rather than complaining, I’ll practice in step with it. I’m looking for shortcomings and thinking about what strengths there are. Technology is advancing rapidly. I’m thinking about how to maintain our unique identity in that context.”

Newsis also cited SEVENTEEN’s label, Pledis Entertainment, affirming WOOZI’s statements. The label emphasized, “It is not true that AI was used in SEVENTEEN’s song lyrics, and we have conveyed our position to the foreign media outlets that reported on this to correct the content.”

In April, Soompi reported that during the promotion of the band’s greatest hits album, 17 Is Right Here, WOOZI discussed practicing songwriting with AI to grasp its advantages and disadvantages but stressed that it was not being actively used.

As of now, a representative for SEVENTEEN has not responded to Billboard’s request for comment.

The BBC subsequently added an editor’s note to clarify their original article, stating, “This article was amended to confirm that while AI is being experimented with in K-pop, it was not used to write songs for the latest SEVENTEEN album.”
