Crowds at Columbia speech on Gaza protests drown out Speaker Johnson

Columbia’s campus has faced controversy since student protesters set up a tent encampment to protest the war in Gaza. The demonstrations received national attention due to reports of antisemitic speech targeting Jewish students, leading Columbia President Nemat “Minouche” Shafik to authorize the NYPD to sweep the encampment. Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine denied responsibility for the hate speech. Rep. Mike Johnson called on Shafik to resign if she couldn’t control the protests and threatened to involve the National Guard. President Biden condemned antisemitism and expressed a desire for understanding the Palestinian situation. Johnson’s speech aimed to boost his conservative credibility after bipartisan cooperation on a foreign aid bill.
