Dallas Shooting: 1 Officer Dead, 2 Wounded; Suspect Also Deceased

DALLAS – A tragic shooting incident late Thursday night in Oak Cliff has resulted in the death of one Dallas police officer and injuries to two others. The Dallas Police Department responded to an emergency call at approximately 10 p.m. in the 900 block of E. Ledbetter Drive.

Upon arrival, officers discovered one officer shot while seated in a patrol vehicle. According to Dallas Police spokesperson Kristin Lowman, gunfire erupted at the scene, leading to injuries for two of the responding officers.

All three officers were quickly transported to local hospitals for treatment. As reported by Lowman in a press briefing early Friday, one officer tragically succumbed to his injuries, another is in critical condition, and the third officer is currently in stable condition. A CBS News Texas photojournalist conveyed that the officer with superficial wounds has regained consciousness and is in “good spirits,” with potential plans for discharge on Friday. The female officer who was shot is facing more serious, yet non-life-threatening, injuries.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, prompting a pursuit by Dallas police. This chase ultimately concluded in the 1000 block of Stemmons Freeway in Lewisville, located about 40 miles from where the incident initially occurred.

According to police reports, as the suspect exited the vehicle armed with a “long gun,” officers engaged the suspect, resulting in the suspect being fatally shot.

The Lewisville police clarified that the Dallas officers were the only ones involved in the pursuit and that no local officers participated.

Throughout the night, CBS News Texas reporters observed a significant police presence at both Baylor University Medical Center and Methodist Dallas Medical Center. A photojournalist at Methodist Dallas Medical Center noted that officers were seen lining up at the entrance to pay their respects.

At around 4 a.m. Friday, officers departed from the hospital in a ceremonial processional honoring their fallen colleague.

Although Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia did not attend the morning press conference, he expressed his deep sorrow on social media, stating, “No words.” Lowman commented during the conference, “Our department is hurting. We have officers that are injured and who are in the hospital, and we lost one of our own.” She urged the community to keep those recovering in their thoughts and prayers, as well as the family of the deceased officer.

As a mark of respect, all flags at city facilities will be lowered to half-staff in memory of the slain officer. Additionally, the northbound lanes of I-35E are expected to remain closed for an extended period due to the incident and ongoing investigations.
