David Loughery, Screenwriter for ‘Star Trek V’ and ‘Passenger 57,’ Dies at 71

David Loughery, the screenwriter known for notable action movies like Dreamscape , Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , and films starring Wesley Snipes such as Money Train and Passenger 57 , has died at the age of 71.

Loughery passed away on Tuesday in St. Petersburg, Florida, due to skin cancer, as confirmed by his friend Fred Rappaport.

Loughery had a significant collaboration with director Joseph Ruben, working together on several films including Dreamscape (1984) with Dennis Quaid; The Good Son (1993), starring Macauley Culkin; Money Train (1995), featuring Woody Harrelson and Snipes; and Blindsided (2013), starring Michelle Monaghan and Michael Keaton.

Born on March 3, 1953, in Oak Park, Illinois, Loughery graduated from Ball State University and later earned his master’s degree from the University of Iowa. In 1981, he received a story credit for an episode of ABC’s Hart to Hart .

Loughery made his film debut with Dreamscape and later took sole screenplay credit and shared a story credit for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), which was directed by William Shatner.

His career continued with the creation of Flashback (1990), starring Dennis Hopper and Kiefer Sutherland; Passenger 57 (1992), directed by Kevin Hooks; and an adaptation of The Three Musketeers (1993) directed by Stephen Herek and featuring Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, and Chris O’Donnell.

Loughery’s screenwriting portfolio also included Neil LaBute’s Lakeview Terrace (2008), starring Samuel L. Jackson, and Obsessed (2009), starring Beyoncé and Idris Elba. He further expanded his career with producer roles in more recent films like The Intruder (2019), Fatale (2020), and Shattered (2022).

Loughery is survived by his wife, Mel; his mother, Joan; and his siblings, William and Amy.
