Deadpool & Wolverine Concept Art Unveils Rob Liefeld-Inspired Variant

Deadpool & Wolverine already includes a notable nod to comics legend Rob Liefeld, naming a shoe store after him and riffing on the viral meme suggesting he struggles to draw feet. Interestingly, another variation of Deadpool inspired by Liefeld’s iconic pouch-filled costumes almost made it into the movie. On Tuesday, Marvel Studios visual development boss Andy Park showcased concept art of a Deadpool variant covered head-to-toe with pouches.

“DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE film concept art series: ROB-POOL! This was my tribute to my original boss & creator of Deadpool, @robliefeld. During preproduction, we experimented with fun variations of Deadpool’s costume for an entertaining sequence,” Park shared on Instagram. “So, I created these versions incorporating classic Liefeld trademarks like exaggerated muscles, pouches, swords, shoulder pads, his original costume color patterns, and original eye shapes. It was a lot of fun! Thanks, Rob! ??”

When we spoke to Liefeld at San Diego Comic-Con, the comic creator said he wasn’t surprised by the threequel’s remarkable box-office performance.

“I knew it was gonna have a ‘2’ in it,” Liefeld said when informed that Deadpool & Wolverine had already made $200 million on opening day. “I’ve been telling everyone, it can clear it. People are fixated on this rating. This isn’t 10 years ago… Today’s kids don’t think in PG-13 and R, and the stuff they get online is way more advanced. So our rating, let’s go, break it.”

“It’s great company to be in,” he added, referring to the other blockbuster movies that have cracked the top ten biggest openers. “They deserve it.”

In Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) changes the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Aaron Stanford also returns as Pyro from the X-Men film series.

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and Lauren Shuler Donner are producing with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. Deadpool & Wolverine is written by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and Shawn Levy. Deadpool & Wolverine is now exclusively in theaters.
