Did Pharrell Williams Record a Drake Diss Track for Despicable Me 4?

Pharrell Williams previously teamed up with the “Despicable Me” franchise with his hit song “Happy” for “Despicable Me 2.” The collaboration proved to be successful, and Williams has returned with another captivating track, “Double Life.” The new song, while intended for the animated film’s soundtrack, has inadvertently linked Williams with a beef involving Kendrick Lamar and Drake.

This connection traces back to Drake’s involvement in Travis Scott’s track “Meltdown.” In his verse, Drake targets Pusha T and mentions Pharrell Williams, saying, “I melt down the chains that I bought from yo’ boss.” This line refers to Williams, who is Pusha T’s superior, and hints that Drake melted chains acquired from Williams’ auction house. These same chains appear in Drake’s video for “Family Matters,” where Drake again refers to Williams, stating, “Ya wanna take up for Pharrell, then come get his legacy out of my house.”

The term “legacy” in this context might refer to the actual chains, but it could also imply that Drake’s actions are an attempt to diminish Pharrell Williams’ esteemed position in both the hip-hop and pop music worlds. Despite these insinuations, there is no direct evidence that Pharrell Williams wrote “Double Life” specifically about Drake.

“Double Life” remains a catchy and appropriate addition to the “Despicable Me” franchise — a soundtrack piece suitable for a children’s film. However, fans often enjoy speculating and reading between the lines. Adding to the intrigue, Kendrick Lamar is set to voice himself in Pharrell Williams’ upcoming LEGO biopic, “Piece by Piece.” Notably, Drake is not part of the cast, which fuels further speculation.

The anticipation for this biopic has some hoping for another collaboration between Williams and Lamar, possibly resulting in a new diss track aimed at Drake. Such a development could make waves, given the current dynamics in the music industry.
