DNC: Why Turn Down the Energy?

Lil Jon electrified the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, making a surprise appearance to announce Georgia delegates’ votes for Vice President Kamala Harris during the DNC roll call on August 20th.

This year’s roll call featured a revamped format, with DJ Cassidy presenting each state’s song. Georgia’s delegates took it further, inviting their local hero, Lil Jon, to share their 123 votes for Harris.

“Georgia, how do you cast your votes?” asked the announcer, as Jermaine Dupri’s “Welcome to Atlanta” played in the background. Suddenly, the music transitioned to DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s 2013 hit “Turn Down for What,” and the camera focused on the Atlanta rapper/producer. Lil Jon descended the stairs, his signature “Yeahhhhh!” echoing through Chicago’s United Center.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are here tonight to officially nominate Kamala Harris for president,” Lil Jon shouted, following up with, “Fire up that loud, another round of shots/ DNC, turn down for what!”

He made his way through the crowd, inciting chants of “We’re not going back!” and “VP Harris!” before joining the Georgia delegates on the floor to cast their votes.

The night also featured other musical performances. Patti LaBelle performed “You Are My Friend” during the “in memoriam” segment, while Common delivered a rendition of “Fortunate,” adjusting the lyrics to support Kamala Harris.

Earlier in the convention, Jason Isbell and Mickey Guyton performed on day one, although James Taylor’s set was cut short due to President Biden’s extended remarks.
