Drivers Endure Hours of Stranded After Road Closures – Telemundo Miami (51)

Drivers in Key Biscayne and nearby areas of Miami are currently experiencing significant delays due to road closures caused by a road rehabilitation project. The closures, which began on Sunday, April 14, are expected to last for approximately two months, leading to reports of drivers being stranded for hours.

The Florida Department of Transportation has announced that contractors have closed the westbound SR 913/Rickenbacker Causeway flyover bridge, which connects to southbound SR 5/US 1/South Dixie Highway and SR 9A/I-95 heading north. This closure is necessary for rehabilitation work on the concrete pavement of the bridge decks, aimed at improving the road infrastructure. However, it has resulted in inconvenience for residents and visitors of Key Biscayne.

Despite the delays caused by the closures, eastbound traffic remains unaffected, and access to SE/SW 26 Road, Brickell Avenue, and South Miami Avenue will be maintained, according to information provided by FDOT. The department has also released a detailed map of the closures and detours to assist those affected by the situation.

Michael Vega, spokesperson for the City of Miami Police Department, addressed the issue by stating, “We are working on a plan to assist with the traffic flow coming out of Rickenbacker. There are no reported events or incidents causing the traffic delays. It appears that the ramp to I-95 is closed for maintenance work, resulting in the traffic congestion. We are assessing the situation and providing assistance.”

With these ongoing challenges, drivers in Key Biscayne are advised to remain patient and exercise caution when using alternative routes during the closure period.
