Ellen DeGeneres is making her final bow. During a recent tour stop in San Francisco titled Ellen’s Last Stand… Up, the former daytime talk show icon announced her upcoming departure from the entertainment industry. “This is the last time you’re going to see me,” she shared with the audience during a Q&A session, as reported by SFGATE. “After my Netflix special, I’m done.” This special, first announced in May, is set to arrive on the streaming platform later this year.

DeGeneres’ decision to step away comes two years after The Ellen DeGeneres Show concluded its celebrated two-decade run. The finale was overshadowed by what some termed as “Mean-Too” allegations. Various staff members accused DeGeneres of fostering a toxic work atmosphere, prompting her to issue a public apology in July 2020.

While reflecting in San Francisco, DeGeneres pointed out that this is not the first time she’s faced expulsion from the industry. The first instance occurred in 1997 when she publicly came out as gay. She humorously added, “Next time, I’ll be kicked out for being old. Old, gay and mean, the triple crown.”

Despite the controversies that clouded the end of her talk show tenure, DeGeneres denied any accusations of cruelty directed at her character. “I am many things, but I am not mean,” she reassured the audience, describing herself instead as “demanding and impatient and tough” and “a strong woman.”
