Emotional Video of Toby Keith’s Final “Ships That Don’t Come In” Session Released

Stepping into the studio one final time is always a poignant moment. Nearly seven months have passed since we lost the legendary Toby Keith, who succumbed to a two-year battle with stomach cancer in February. Recently, the Big Dog Daddy was honored with an all-star tribute concert at Bridgestone Arena. This event featured artists like Eric Church, Luke Bryan, Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, HARDY, and many more, all paying homage to Toby, his music, and his enduring legacy.

One of the most heart-wrenching moments of the tribute concert was the unveiling of a video showing Toby’s final recording session. This footage captured Toby as he stepped into the studio to record his rendition of Joe Diffie’s hit “Ships That Don’t Come In.” The duet, featuring Luke Combs, was initially released on HARDY’s HIXTAPE: Vol. 3: DIFFTAPE, a 17-song project dedicated to honoring the late, great Joe Diffie.

The song’s theme, which reflects on appreciating the blessings one has received, takes on added significance as Toby’s last recording. It is a particularly poignant and fitting tribute to the country music legend. Following its debut at the tribute concert, the video of this final recording session has now been released for the first time.

Luke Combs shared his thoughts on the opportunity to record the song with Toby, expressing his deep respect and admiration: “To be on a song with Toby was a no-brainer when it got presented to me. That was something I had always hoped to do but never knew if it would happen or not. It being one of Joe’s songs, especially this one, made it even better; he was there the night I got inducted into the Opry and actually gave me my Opry member award. I grew up listening to both of those guys’ music, so to be a part of this version of the song and it now be Toby’s last recording is kind of hard to put into words. Country music misses them greatly, but I hope we’re doing justice to continue what they started.”

Although it’s bittersweet to see Toby in the studio for his final session, fans and the country music community should feel grateful for this last piece of artistry from such a revered figure. This recording serves as a moving testament to Toby Keith’s remarkable career and the indelible mark he left on country music.
