Ex-Colorado sheriff’s deputy found guilty of misdemeanor in the case of man who sought assistance

A former Colorado sheriff’s deputy was convicted of reckless endangerment in the shooting death of a 22-year-old man in distress who had called for help after his car got stuck. The deputy was also charged with second-degree murder and misconduct but was not convicted. Prosecutors alleged that the deputy needlessly escalated the situation, while the defense claimed the shooting was justified. The family of the victim wants the prosecution to continue. The victim, who exhibited signs of a mental health crisis, was shot after refusing to exit his vehicle despite multiple attempts by officers. Concerns were raised about how individuals in crisis are treated by law enforcement.
