Experts say the Oregon State Police superintendent played a highly unusual role in a high-speed chase and shootout

Oregon State Police Superintendent Casey Codding joined a pursuit of an Amber Alert gunman fleeing a double murder with his 1-year-old son. Codding exchanged gunfire with the suspect but no one was hit. His involvement was unusual for a top police administrator. Outside experts said Codding’s actions were justified given the circumstances. The suspect, Elias Huizar, eventually shot and killed himself while his son was unharmed. Codding, a 24-year state police veteran, was previously involved in another high-profile case before becoming superintendent. He and the sergeant who fired at Huizar are on paid leave pending investigation. State police will conduct an internal review of the incident.
