Father from Michigan becomes the first person charged under new safe gun storage law after his son accidentally shoots himself in the face

Michigan prosecutors have charged a father for violating the safe storage law after his 8-year-old son shot himself in the face at their home. The boy is in “extremely critical” condition in a Detroit hospital. The handgun was accessed by the boy from an “unsafely” stored location. The father, Theo Nichols, was not allowed to own a firearm due to a previous conviction. He is the first to be charged under the new law which requires secure storage of firearms in the presence of minors. The incident serves as a warning to parents to prioritize gun safety.
