Federal judge denies Trump’s attempt to dismiss $83.3M E. Jean Carroll defamation judgment

A federal judge has rejected former President Trump’s latest attempt for a new trial in his defamation case against writer E. Jean Carroll. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan upheld the verdict and $83.3 million award, stating that Trump’s arguments were “without merit.” The jury found Trump liable for defamation after Carroll accused him of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s. Kaplan highlighted Trump’s malicious attacks on Carroll, including public threats and personal attacks, and emphasized the need for a significant deterrent to prevent further defamation. Carroll’s attorney expressed satisfaction with the judge’s decision, noting Trump’s continued defamation during the trial and his conduct in the courtroom.
