First-ever use of “psychological autopsy” in Kansas criminal case sheds light on fatal shooting victim’s mindset

Sergeant Brandon Hauptman of the Hays Police Department found Kristen Trickle near death in bed, with a firearm, on a dark Halloween morning. Kristen was only dressed in underwear. Despite efforts to save her, Kristen passed away. Kristen’s husband, Colby Trickle, claimed she died by suicide, but suspicions arose due to inconsistencies in his statements and evidence discovered on his phone. After years of investigation and a trial, Colby Trickle was found guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 50 years. This case sheds light on domestic violence issues and the impact on families.
