First high-level conference for United Methodists held following rift over LGBTQ inclusion

Thousands of United Methodists are gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina for the General Conference, delayed from 2020 due to the pandemic. The 11-day meeting includes voting delegates and focuses on church-wide policies like bans on LGBTQ-related issues. Other key topics include disaffiliations, regionalization, and budgets. Bishop Thomas Bickerton addressed the recent schism and emphasized the need for rebuilding the church. Only 862 official voting delegates are attending, with the majority from the U.S. and Africa. The conference is critical for the future of the denomination and its global impact on Methodism.
