First Top-Level Conference for United Methodists since Split over LGBTQ Inclusion Opens

Thousands of United Methodists are gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina for the General Conference, delayed from 2020 due to COVID-19. Delegates from around the world are present to vote on various issues, including potentially lifting LGBTQ-related bans. Other topics at the conference include disaffiliations, regionalization, and budgets. New York Area Bishop spoke on the recent schism and the need for church revitalization. Delegates are primarily from the US, Africa, the Philippines, Europe, and other affiliated churches. Not all international delegates are confirmed to attend, causing concerns about voting results. United Methodists belong to a tradition emphasizing evangelism, holy living, and social service, with a significant presence in the US, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
