The fungus leads to limb loss and hypersexual behavior in male cicadas. Scientists hope to study the fungus for drug discovery and genetics research. Despite the bizarre effects, it is not recommended to eat infected cicadas. The cicadas are harmless to humans and pets, and this year will see the co-emergence of two broods for the first time since 1803.
