Gen Z’s Top Film Picks: Which Movies Captivate Young Audiences?

Gen Z, aged between 15 and 24, is a crucial demographic for the entertainment industry. According to Parrot Analytics’ Audience Solutions, they constitute 27% of the global audience for TV and movies, surpassing any other age group. A recent article by TheWrap highlighted TV shows popular among this generation. Now, let’s focus on recent movie releases that have significantly impacted them.

Using Parrot Analytics’ Demand data and Audience Demographics, we can identify movies released since the start of 2022 that have been both popular and heavily viewed by Gen Z in the U.S. These movies are highlighted in the top right corner of the chart.

Franchise titles dominate this space, especially animated ones. Movies like “Despicable Me 4,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” “Inside Out 2,” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” have attracted more than 50% of their audiences from Gen Z, all while achieving high demand. While not part of a franchise, Pixar’s “Turning Red” emerged as the most in-demand movie among this age group.

Non-animated franchise films also resonate with Gen Z. Movies like “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire,” and “Fast X” have seen a significant portion of their viewership come from this demographic, even though they generally target older audiences.

Aside from franchises, Gen Z is also drawn to romantic dramas. Titles like Colleen Hoover’s “It Ends With Us” and “Challengers,” along with movies based on popular intellectual properties like “Barbie,” have garnered over 40% of their audience from Gen Z.

It’s interesting to note which franchise movies, while popular, had a lower share of Gen Z viewers. Among Marvel’s recent releases, “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3,” “The Marvels,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” displayed high initial demand but didn’t resonate as much with Gen Z compared to “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness,” the franchise’s most popular movie with this generation. For DC Comics, “The Batman” outperformed “Blue Beetle” in terms of demand, although the latter engaged more with Gen Z.

As Gen Z continues to grow in influence, understanding their viewing habits will be pivotal for the entertainment industry. By leveraging demand data and audience demographics, companies can better tailor their content to meet the interests of Gen Z.
