GOP antisemitism bill approved by House amidst college protests

Many who voted against the bill, including Democrats and Republicans, felt that it limits free speech. The bill, known as the Antisemitism Awareness Act, passed the House with a vote of 320-91 and mandates the use of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism. This definition includes examples like denying Jewish self-determination and drawing comparisons between Israeli policies and Nazi actions. However, some Democrats, like Rep. Jerry Nadler, expressed concerns that this bill could stifle constitutionally-protected free speech. The bill’s approval coincided with ongoing protests on college campuses related to the war in Gaza, highlighting tensions between views critical of Israel and accusations of antisemitism.
