Grier Shields Wears Brooke’s Tailored ‘90s Wedding Dress for Iconic Moment

When she needed a dress for an important occasion, 18-year-old Grier Henchy decided to look in her mom’s closet. Given that her mom is Brooke Shields, there were bound to be some iconic options. Grier chose to reinvent the gown her mother wore when she married Andre Agassi in 1997, tailoring it to fit her style.

“Her graduation dress was my first wedding dress,” Brooke Shields told PEOPLE. Grier made some modifications to the gown, like re-boning it to make it more form-fitting and sleek. “We took out all the poof because I didn’t want it poofy,” Grier explained. They also made it strapless to suit her taste.

“She looked great in it,” said Shields. “It’s such an honor when they want to wear your stuff. Normally, they don’t think I’m cool.”

Indeed, the ivory gown looked stunning on Grier. Shields proudly shared photos from the event on Instagram this June, with a caption that read, “My youngest baby graduated from high school this week. I am so endlessly proud of her & the woman she’s becoming. The future looks so bright for you, Grier.” She added, “Next stop, college and then the world. I LOVE YOU SO SO MUCH IT HURTS 🎓 @grierhhenchy.”

Grier paired the hand-me-down dress with a sparkly necklace and matching ivory watch and heels. She let her long reddish-brown hair flow straight down her back and carried white roses as she walked to the ceremony with her mom by her side, who was dressed elegantly in a black dress and heels.

The Mother of the Bride star, who shares Grier and her elder sister Rowan, 21, with her second husband Chris Henchy, expressed how much she enjoys seeing her daughters wear items from her collection. “Honestly, they can wear anything because just to have it have another life – you save the stuff and wonder why,” Shields mentioned to PEOPLE. “It’s like, some big Sotheby’s auction? I highly doubt it. Unless they’re iconic items. So when they have another life, it feels good.”

For Grier, the graduation dress had extra significance. “He’s a good guy so to me it was really like a big full circle moment,” Shields said. “And it honors something, and I think that’s healthy.”

Grier and Rowan often reflect their mother’s style. Rowan wore her mom’s 1998 red Golden Globes gown to her prom in 2021, and Grier sported her mom’s 2001 Badgely Mischka dress to an event earlier this year. Both girls have also coordinated colors with their mom at various times.

It’s touching to see these girls honor their mother in such sweet ways!
