Harris, pressed on policy shifts, insists ‘my values have not changed’

In her first comprehensive interview since becoming the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed questions about her evolving policy positions during a CNN segment. When asked about these shifts, she affirmed that her “values have not changed.”

During the interview, CNN anchor and chief political correspondent Dana Bash inquired about the reasons behind Harris’s changing stances on issues such as climate change. She posed several questions, including whether Harris’s adjustments were a result of gaining more experience or the realities of campaigning in a Democratic primary. Bash emphasized the importance of voters knowing if Harris’s current policies will remain consistent moving forward.

In response, Harris maintained, “Dana, I think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is that my values have not changed.” She referenced the Green New Deal, stating her long-standing belief in the urgency of addressing the climate crisis. “I have worked on it,” she added, reinforcing her commitment to implementing metrics and deadlines related to climate action.

Harris elaborated, “We did that with the Inflation Reduction Act, where we set goals for the United States and the world in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” She emphasized her consistent values regarding border security, mentioning her experience as California’s attorney general, where she focused on prosecuting transnational crime involving guns, drugs, and human smuggling. “My values have not changed,” she reiterated.

In a separate clip from the interview, Harris indicated her willingness to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet, although she did not specify anyone in particular. “I’ve got 68 days until this election, so I’m not putting the cart before the horse,” she noted. Harris expressed her belief in the importance of incorporating diverse opinions in the decision-making process, stating that it benefits the American public.

Harris discussed her commitment to including individuals with varied perspectives in significant roles within her administration. “I think it’s important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences,” she acknowledged.

Harris also responded to comments made by former President Donald Trump during a convention. Trump had questioned her racial identity and seemed to express confusion regarding her heritage, stating, “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black.” When Bash asked Harris to respond to these remarks, she dismissed them with, “Same old, tired playbook. Next question, please.”

This interview marks a significant moment as Harris prepares for the upcoming election, highlighting her stance on important issues and her approach to governance. The full interview aired later that evening on CNN, showcasing the Vice President in a candid and revealing light.

As the campaign progresses, Harris’s statements about her values and willingness to bring diverse voices into her administration may resonate with voters seeking integrity and inclusivity in leadership.
