Another powerful theatrical release, on Thursday, April 18: Abigail. The film focuses on a group of kidnappers who capture and must guard Abigail, the daughter of the most powerful figure in the underworld: they ask for 50 million dollars, until Abigail reveals her true nature as a vampire girl, hunting them down one by one. Will they survive?
Abigail is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a script written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick. It stars Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, Giancarlo Esposito, and Alisha Weir as the title character. The story is freely inspired by Dracula’s daughter (1936) by director Lambert Hillyer.
They kidnapped her and imprisoned her in an isolated mansion. The assignment seemed very simple, since they only had to hold the girl while they waited for her father to pay the large ransom of 50 million dollars. But it won’t take them long to discover the truth about Abigail: a peculiar creature that will unleash a real bloodbath.
With the premiere of Abigail on the doorstep, the first reviews have already been published by those lucky enough to see the film during the Overlook Film Festival. And critics place the new work of the directors of Scream 5 (2022) and Scream 6 (2023) as one of the horror films of the year.
“Insanely magnificent! The directors of Scream 5 and 6 return with glorious blood in abundance. A violent thriller with much more. Triple that and multiply by four. “This isn’t just another horror movie, it’s one of the best horror movies of all time!” said critic @theatomreview.
“It’s a blood-soaked good moment of madness. A clever spin on the vampire genre filled with plenty of wild scenes and gore, further fueled by a perfectly chosen electric ensemble,” @PNemiroff noted.
“The result is an old-school vampire movie with modern style and freshness: it’s absolutely explosive to watch with a crowd (…). “Abigail is a perfect horror film and already one of the best of 2024,” details BJ Colangelo of SlashFilm.
Abigail opens in cinemas in Argentina on April 18, so it will soon be possible to see if Melissa Barrera’s new film is among the best of horror cinema, as the first reactions to the film say. A grotesquely bloody production.
