Hollywood Brown Highly Motivated to Return to Chiefs ASAP After Injury

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid delivered an important update on Marquise “Hollywood” Brown on Monday. The good news is that Brown’s sternoclavicular joint injury did not require surgery.

This type of injury is rare, and recovery times can vary widely depending on the grade and direction of the dislocation. So far, the updates have been positive. Although Reid mentioned that Brown’s injury was a posterior dislocation, there has been no further update or official confirmation on that.

A posterior dislocation is generally considered more serious than an anterior one. It’s an aspect worth noting as we await further updates on Brown’s condition.

In almost any situation, it’s crucial to prioritize the player’s health before rushing them back onto the field. Games in September do not hold the same weight as those in December or January. In 2023, for instance, the Chiefs began their season against the Lions without tight end Travis Kelce. That early-season loss didn’t stop the Chiefs from eventually winning the Super Bowl.

For Brown, however, there is a special motivation to get back on the field in time for Week 1: facing the Chiefs’ opponent, the Baltimore Ravens. Brown was the 25th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Ravens, who also happen to be the Chiefs’ Week 1 rival.

The 27-year-old, 5’9″, 170-lb. wide receiver has faced the Ravens once in his career. As a member of the Arizona Cardinals last season, Brown recorded 6 catches on 9 targets for 33 yards, including a touchdown, though his team lost that game.

If Brown can play in the Sept. 5 game, which kicks off the entire NFL season, it would mean he recovered in just 26 days. While some reports suggest that recovery from sternoclavicular injuries can be as short as 2-4 weeks, the outlook remains concerning.

Should Brown be unable to return in time to face his former team, he would have another ten days before the Week 2 game against the Bengals. This might be a more realistic target for the team’s broader Super Bowl aspirations. However, if you ask Brown, he would likely say the game he has marked on his calendar has not changed.
