House Approves Antisemitism Legislation with Strong Bipartisan Backing Following Campus Arrests

The House passed a bipartisan bill to combat antisemitism as pro-Palestinian protests occur at U.S. colleges. The Antisemitism Awareness Act mandates the Education Department to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism. This definition includes hatred towards Jews, calling for harm, and holding Jews accountable for Israel’s actions. Senate approval is uncertain. Republicans initiated the bill after Hamas’ attack on Israel. Democrats argued the bill is too broad and could restrict free speech. Some Republicans opposed the bill citing religious beliefs. Activists emphasize historical scapegoating of Jews and violence justification. Summer Concepcion, Megan Lebowitz, and Rebecca reported for NBC News.
