House hearing on George Washington University protest delayed after law enforcement removes encampment and arrests more than 30 individuals

The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC, cleared out a pro-Palestinian encampment on George Washington University’s campus, arresting 30 protesters. The action occurred before a scheduled House Oversight Committee hearing, prompting the cancellation of the hearing. Pro-Palestinian protests have emerged on various campuses across the US, resulting in arrests and debates over free speech. Police used pepper spray to disperse protesters while implementing non-arrest methods to deescalate tensions. Demonstrators were given multiple warnings to disperse but were eventually arrested. Similar actions were taken at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
