How Glen Powell Overcame a Breakup While Filming ‘Twisters’

While filming the movie Twisters, star Glen Powell adopted a dog named Brisket. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Powell and the crew reflected on the heartfelt decision to bring the rescue dog into his life.

"We’re on set, and I was like, ‘Are you sure you want to get a puppy right now?" recalled Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung. "But he did, and everybody loved that dog."

Indeed, everyone adored Brisket. Entertainment Weekly managed to capture some charming photos of Powell with Brisket. For Powell, adopting the dog helped him navigate through a personal breakup. He had always wanted a dog and the sense of being a "father," so adopting Brisket fulfilled both desires.

"I was going through a breakup at the time and was in the middle of Enid, Oklahoma, and I had always wanted a dog," Powell revealed. "It was something I thought about a lot, but it was somewhere in this coffee shop in Enid… I don’t even know how to describe it, I just had the desire to be a father."

Powell sent a heartfelt, "heartbreakingly depressing video of me why I needed this dog" to the adoption agency and was approved to adopt Brisket. On a weekend off from shooting Twisters, Powell traveled to Los Angeles to bring Brisket home.

"Everybody knew how excited I was," Powell recalled about his Twisters co-stars and crew. "I was like, ‘Guys, I’m going to pick him up!’"

Upon bringing Brisket onto the Twisters set, Powell remembered the challenges of crate training and sleepless nights. "He was crying through the night," Powell remembered. "I felt like literally a new father, where I wasn’t sleeping while shooting this movie." Yet, Brisket made himself at home with every department head, often taking naps in Powell’s chair, making him something of a set mascot.

"He really became sort of a set mascot on that movie. It’s just adorable," Powell added.

Brisket has been a "magical gift" for Powell, who described the on-set experience as often lonely. "Sets can be very lonely places," Powell admitted. "And it’s interesting when you see a dog that’s just filling you up with love, how it brings a cast together even more. There’s something wonderful about animals, about how they can bring our walls down a bit and expedite friendships and things like that."

"So yeah, Brisket’s been amazing. I consider him the best special feature of Twisters," Powell concluded.

Glen Powell is one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars. He gained initial fame for roles in Scream Queens and had smaller parts in movies like The Dark Knight Rises, The Expendables 3, and Hidden Figures.

However, it was Top Gun: Maverick that significantly raised his profile. He followed that by executive producing and starring in Devotion. In 2023, Powell teamed with Richard Linklater to co-write and star in Hit Man.

Later that year, he starred with Sydney Sweeney in the rom-com Anyone but You, which grossed over $220 million worldwide.

In Twisters, Powell portrays a storm-chasing social media star named Tyler Owens. The movie also stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, and is set to be released on July 19.
