Hulu Irish Comedy ‘Obituary’ to Get a Second Season (EXCLUSIVE)

Irish comedy “Obituary” is gearing up for a second season, according to sources.

The popular black comedy stars Siobhán Cullen as an underpaid obituary writer who turns to murder. Written by Ray Lawlor, the show is poised to return with six new episodes.

Lawlor is set to continue writing the script, with Magamedia and APC Studios as the producers, and Hulu providing funding.

Although the cast for the second season has not been confirmed, it’s unlikely that the show would proceed without Cullen. She has recently appeared in “The Dry” and the Netflix series “Bodkin.”

Season 1, which aired on Irish network RTE, followed Cullen’s character, Elvira Clancy, an obituarist desperate to generate more work. She ends up committing murders that catch the attention of a crime correspondent at the local paper, who inadvertently starts to fall for her.

Michael Smiley, Danielle Galligan, Ronan Rafferty, David Ganly, and Noni Stapleton also starred in Season 1.

The show’s logline reads: “24-year-old Elvira Clancy adores her new job writing obituaries. But when her newspaper faces financial trouble and her boss the cuts her salary, she finds herself being paid per obituary overnight. When she “accidentally” kills a nasty piece of work in the town, she discovers a previously untapped bloodlust. She relishes using crafty methods to kill off the town’s unpleasant residents while making the deaths look like accidents. Stalk. Kill. Publish. Repeat. However, a new crime correspondent, who Elvira really likes, throws a wrench into her plans.”

Shot in Donegal, the show premiered on RTE in Ireland last September, followed by Hulu in November. Directed by John Hayes and Oonagh Kearney, “Obituary” has been favorably compared to “Dexter” and garnered several awards at the Irish Film and Television Awards, including best drama series and best actress.

Representatives for Hulu did not provide a comment at press time.
