Idris Elba and King Charles have teamed up to connect with the younger members of their country. The UK-born actor and the British monarch joined forces for an event aimed at uplifting the next generation.

On July 12, King Charles welcomed Elba to St. James Palace in London to discuss the rising issue of youth violence. While the UK enforces strict gun laws, knife crime remains a significant problem in the city.

According to ITV News, knife crime has increased by 20% since 2023, with over 14,500 offenses reported in the past year. Elba has been an outspoken advocate for banning weapons like machetes and serrated “zombie” knives. At the event, he spoke out about the increasing number of lives lost to preventable violence.

“This topic always spikes in interest when we lose a life,” Elba said, according to the Associated Press. “I think where we are right now … our country is wanting to have some change and is consistently banging on that door for change.”

Newly elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined them as they discussed the Elba Hope Foundation and its “Don’t Stop Your Future” anti-knife campaign. This initiative, in partnership with the King’s Trust, seeks to create opportunities for the country’s youth while reducing the violence that threatens their futures.

Communal youth leaders also participated in discussions alongside the nation’s leading figures. For Elba, this partnership is personal, as he once received a 1,500-pound grant from the Trust. This funding allowed him to attend the National Youth Music Theatre, which he believes was a turning point in his future.

The Foundation’s efforts extend beyond the British Isles. In collaboration with the King’s Trust International, they are also working in Sierra Leone to develop educational and employment opportunities, as well as digital skills training.

For young Londoners, the event focuses on considering their stories for future projects and programming.
