Immigrant’s Multi-Billion Dollar Powerball Win Shines Light on the Iu Mien Community

Cheng “Charlie” Saephan, an Iu Mien immigrant, won a $1.3 billion Powerball jackpot in Oregon, changing his life and raising awareness about his ethnic group. The Iu Mien people originated in China, fled Laos during the Vietnam War, and settled in the U.S. after the conflict. Saephan’s win is significant for the Iu Mien community, many of whom faced challenges in adjusting to Western life. Saephan, who has cancer, plans to use the money to care for his family and health. The jackpot was the fourth largest in Powerball history and the eighth largest in U.S. jackpot games.
