Indictment alleges Rep. Henry Cuellar and wife accepted nearly $600,000 in bribes

Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas and his wife face charges for allegedly accepting $600,000 in bribes from foreign entities between late 2014 and November 2021. They appeared in court in Houston and were released on bond, denying the accusations. Cuellar defended his actions in Congress and vowed to continue seeking reelection. Prosecutors claim the couple received bribes from an oil company controlled by Azerbaijan and a bank in Mexico City, influencing legislation and financial regulations. They used shell companies to receive payments, spending the money on taxes, debt, and luxury items. Cuellar’s home and office were raided in 2022. His charges prompted calls for resignation from the NRCC.
