‘Inside Out 2’ Tops Box Office for Fifth Weekend

Pixar animation film “Inside Out 2” maintained its top spot at the South Korean box office for the fifth consecutive weekend, successfully fending off challenges from local films. The latest contender was the disaster-action film “Project Silence.”

“Inside Out 2” secured $3.53 million from Friday to Sunday, capturing a 30% share of the market, according to data from Kobis, the Korean Film Council’s tracking service. This boost brings the film’s cumulative earnings to $53.3 million since its release on June 12. It is now the third highest-grossing film in Korea this year and the top performer among imported titles.

Directed and co-written by Kim Tae-gon, “Project Silence” is set on a road bridge near Incheon Airport. The film features a series of accidents, explosions, and mayhem, including an attack by genetically engineered dogs trained to target humans based on their voices.

“Project Silence” earned $2.49 million over the weekend from 356,000 spectators, accounting for a 21% share of the weekend market.

“Escape,” released a week earlier, slipped to third place. It earned $2.43 million over the latest weekend, amassing a cumulative total of $9.19 million over 12 days in theaters.

Another holdover, “Handsome Guys,” earned $1.48 million in fourth place. A Korean remake of “Tucker & Dale vs Evil,” the film has accumulated $8.91 million over 19 days in theaters. Local media report that the film, made on a low budget, has now reached profitability.

“Hijack 1971” brought in $707,000 in its fourth weekend, expanding its total earnings to $11.3 million since its debut on June 21.

“Doraemon: Nobita’s Earth Symphony” was the second-highest new release for the weekend, finishing sixth overall. The Japanese animation earned $218,000 over the weekend, bringing its five-day opening total to $270,000.

“Fly Me to the Moon,” a U.S. comedy starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, opened in seventh place in Korea. The film collected $145,000 over its three-day debut and various previews.

“A Quiet Place: Day One” earned a modest $103,000 in its third weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $3.84 million.

Japanese animation and gaming derivative “Uma Musume: Pretty Derby – Beginning of a New Era” earned $79,500 between Friday and Sunday. Over its four-day opening run, it collected $138,000.

“Love Lies Bleeding,” the acclaimed fantasy film that opened the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in Korea, debuted in tenth spot at the Korean box office. The film earned $50,900 over the weekend and $94,000 over its five-day opening run.

Overall, the nationwide weekend box office slipped by 20% to $11.7 million.
