Interstate near Arizona-New Mexico border reopens following train derailment, as remaining fuel continues to burn off

Interstate 40 has been reopened in both directions after a controlled burn of remaining fuel from a freight train derailment near the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Evacuation orders have been lifted and Fire Chief Lawrence Montoya Jr. said the situation is under control. No injuries were reported during the derailment or the subsequent firefighting operation. The New Mexico Department of Transportation warned of heavy smoke in some areas and delays for motorists. The cause of the derailment is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and other federal agencies. Repair of the tracks is also in progress.
