Investigation launched into Black man’s death in police custody following release of bodycam footage showing him handcuffed and prone on bar floor

An Ohio man, Frank Tyson, died in police custody after being handcuffed and facedown on the floor of a social club. Police body-camera footage shows Tyson resisting being handcuffed and saying he couldn’t breathe. Officers restrained him with a knee on his back despite his pleas. They only realized he was in a medical crisis after several minutes. Tyson, a Black man, died at a hospital less than an hour later. The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the case, and the U.S. Department of Justice has warned about the dangers of positional asphyxia in police custody.
