Israel faces renewed confrontation with resurgent Hamas in northern Gaza; U.S. cautions that Rafah assault may not eradicate militants

The Israeli military intensified attacks on northern Gaza on Monday, renewing questions over Israeli strategy in the war as the U.S. issued criticism. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that a ground assault on Rafah would not eliminate Hamas. Blinken called for a credible post-war plan for Gaza and emphasized the need for Israel to prioritize enduring security. Talks for a new cease-fire deal have broken down, leading to a collapse in the Gaza health system. Despite the toll on civilians, Hamas remains strong, engaging in fierce clashes with Israeli forces. Alternative courses of action may be necessary to defeat Hamas.
