LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – For director Paul Feig, the comedy film “Jackpot” evokes the style of what he refers to as “the Lost Jackie Chan movie,” reminiscent of the famous Hong Kong actor and martial artist’s work.

“His (Jackie Chan’s) characters always seem to find themselves in situations they didn’t want to be in. They’re in over their heads, trying to get out, not being aggressive, just fighting their way out of something,” explained Feig.

“And that just checked every box for me. His movies are not only funny but also carry a sense of danger and artistry,” he added.

“Jackpot” is an Amazon MGM Studios action-comedy starring Awkwafina and John Cena. Set in a dystopian Los Angeles, the story revolves around Katie and Noel, who work together in a world where a “Grand Lottery” winner can be legally murdered before sundown by someone eager to claim the multibillion-dollar jackpot.

The movie premiers in U.S. theaters on Thursday.

One significant aspect that brought the story to life was Cena’s ability to perform some of his stunts, leveraging his wrestling background.

“I’m not diminishing the amazing work of our stunt team or my talented double, Spencer Thomas, but the action in ‘Jackpot’ involved many skills that I can offer a coordinator,” Cena told Reuters.

“This project involved throwing big haymakers, tossing people around, and a lot of stunt driving – all things I enjoy and practice in WWE,” added Cena, also known for his role in “The Suicide Squad.”

Despite his previous experience aiding his performance in “Jackpot,” there was no pre-filming time for Cena to bond with co-star Awkwafina.

“We didn’t have time to build rapport before filming, but we actually ended up forming a great rapport during the shoot,” noted Cena.

Awkwafina echoed this sentiment, finding the collaborative process with Cena enriching.

“I loved working with John Cena. He’s truly one of the most professional individuals I’ve ever worked with,” said the “Crazy Rich Asians” actor.
