James B. Sikking, ‘Hill Street Blues’ and ‘Doogie Howser’ Actor, Dies at 90

James B. Sikking, widely recognized for his roles in popular TV series like Hill Street Blues and Doogie Howser, M.D., has passed away at the age of 90. Sikking died on Saturday at his home in Los Angeles after battling dementia. His publicist, Cynthia Snyder, confirmed that the actor was surrounded by family during his final moments.

Snyder noted Sikking’s varied and significant contributions to entertainment, describing his face as one that brought drama, comedy, tragedy, and hilarious farce to the screen. She highlighted his career, which spanned over six decades across television, film, and the stage, emphasizing his talent, integrity, and imagination, which continuously captivated audiences.

Sikking was born in Los Angeles in 1934. He began his acting career in the late 1950s and gradually made a name for himself in television during the 1980s. His widespread acclaim came from his portrayal of Lt. Howard Hunter in the groundbreaking police drama Hill Street Blues. The show was renowned for its realistic depiction of policing and complex characters, becoming a hallmark of 1980s television and setting a benchmark for future TV dramas.

Apart from Hill Street Blues, Sikking also won the hearts of a younger generation as Dr. David Howser, the father of the titular character in Doogie Howser, M.D., played by Neil Patrick Harris. The medical drama-comedy followed the life of a teenage prodigy doctor, showcasing Sikking’s versatility and broad appeal as an actor.

Throughout his career, Sikking appeared in various other TV shows and films, including The Outer Limits, The Rockford Files, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and The Pelican Brief. These roles further cemented his status as a versatile and dedicated actor in the industry.

Sikking is survived by his wife Florine, son Andrew, daughter Dr. Emily Sikking, and his four grandchildren.
