Born on August 23, 1977, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Jared Scott Fogle was raised in a Jewish household. He celebrated significant milestones such as his bar mitzvah during a trip to Israel. Fogle completed his high school education at North Central High School in Indianapolis and later graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 2000. Before his infamous association with Subway, he briefly worked in the revenue management department at American Trans Air.
Jared Fogle’s journey into the public eye began unexpectedly when a college newspaper article about his significant weight loss, achieved primarily through a diet consisting of Subway sandwiches, captured widespread attention. This story was picked up by Men’s Health magazine and eventually caught the eye of Subway’s advertising team. Fogle was then featured in a regional Subway commercial that launched on January 1, 2000, which marked the beginning of his long-term association with the brand.
Over the next 15 years, Fogle appeared in more than 300 commercials for Subway, promoting healthy eating and fitness. His story was a key element in Subway’s marketing strategy, significantly contributing to the brand’s growth during that period. Fogle’s public persona was so influential that he was parodied in popular media, including an episode of “South Park” and video games, highlighting his status as a cultural icon.
In 2004, Jared Fogle established the Jared Foundation, aimed at combating childhood obesity through educational programs and resources. Despite its noble intentions, the foundation was later criticized for mismanagement and minimal impact. Fogle also made appearances in various media outside of Subway, including WWE events and the “Sharknado” film series, further cementing his status in popular culture.
Jared Fogle’s fall from grace was swift and severe. In 2015, he was investigated by the FBI for his involvement in child pornography and sex crimes against minors. This investigation led to his arrest and subsequent conviction on charges of distribution and receipt of child pornography and traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor. Fogle was sentenced to 15 years and eight months in federal prison, a stark contrast to his previous public image as a health and fitness advocate.
At the height of his career, Jared Fogle’s net worth was estimated at around $15 million, largely built through his endorsement deal with Subway and speaking engagements. However, following his arrest and the legal proceedings, much of his wealth was forfeited as part of the restitution to his victims, totaling approximately $1.4 million. The scandal also led to Subway severing all ties with Fogle, ending any potential future earnings associated with the brand.
As of now, Jared Fogle is incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Englewood, Colorado. His projected release date is in 2029, subject to good behavior and other conditional releases. The case remains a significant example of a public figure’s fall from grace and the serious consequences of criminal behavior, regardless of one’s prior status or fame.
