Jenna Ortega Reveals ‘Terrifying’ Reason for Deleting X

Jenna Ortega has shared that she deactivated her account on X (formerly known as Twitter) after receiving a series of explicit pictures, including at least one generated by artificial intelligence.

“Did I like being 14 and making a Twitter account because I was supposed to and seeing dirty edited content of me as a child? No. It’s terrifying. It’s corrupt. It’s wrong,” said the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” actor during a recent appearance on “The Interview” podcast with The New York Times.

Ortega elaborated that she’s come across AI-generated photos of herself as a child, some of which were pornographic. One of the first direct messages she opened on the social media platform featured an unsolicited photo of a man’s genitals.

“And that was just the beginning of what was to come,” she told host Lulu Garcia-Navarro.

Ortega mentioned that she was previously advised to have an account on the platform to build her “image.”

However, she decided to deactivate her account on X due to an “influx” of messages following the release of the popular Netflix series “Wednesday.”

“These absurd images and photos, and I already was in a confused state that I just deleted it,” she said.

Ortega expressed her hatred for AI but acknowledged its potential for amazing applications, such as detecting breast cancer four years before it develops.

“That’s beautiful. Let’s keep it to that,” she said.

She described the experience of receiving such messages as “disgusting,” adding that it made her feel “bad” and “uncomfortable.”

“Anyway, that’s why I deleted it, because I couldn’t say anything without seeing something like that. So one day I just woke up, and I thought, Oh, I don’t need this anymore. So I dropped it,” she concluded.
