Jennifer Garner’s Intense Workout Transformed Her to ‘Marvel Fit’ for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Jennifer Garner took to Instagram to reveal the rigorous exercise routine she followed to reprise her role as Elektra in the upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine” film. Twenty years ago, she portrayed this character in “Elektra,” but this time, the physical demands were even higher for the Marvel project.

In a video she posted, the 52-year-old actress showcased her intense workouts. Garner shared that she was fit while filming “Elektra,” but she needed a new level of fitness to meet the standards for a Marvel film. The transformation process started when Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy suggested she bring Elektra back for the third “Deadpool” film during their work on “The Adam Project.”

“We were on the set of ‘The Adam Project,’ and they gave each other this look they have that can communicate an idea, 20 pages of dialogue, nuclear codes — there is a crazy artistic kismet between those two,” Garner captioned her post. “Other than trying to convince my kids’ preschool buddies that I was secretly a ninja, I hadn’t picked up Elektra’s sais since 2004; I was fit, but not Marvel fit,” she continued.

To meet the heightened physical requirements, Garner’s exercise regime included swimming, lifting weights, boxing, running, trampolining, and balancing exercises. The actress further emphasized that she needed comprehensive preparation to get herself ready for Elektra’s comeback.

Garner expressed her appreciation for Reynolds and Levy in her post, noting their remarkable ability to uplift people around them. She recounted, “I didn’t know that Elektra and I needed an ending, but Shawn and Ryan did. They are gifted in many ways, but seeing and elevating people around them is at the top of the list.” Garner also mentioned her fondness for being on set with co-stars like Hugh Jackman, Dafne Keen, Channing Tatum, and Wesley Snipes. “Shooting the fight was so fun, being there all together — truly like a dream,” she added.

Sealing her gratitude, Garner concluded, “I’m proud of my friends and grateful to be up there with them. Thank you doesn’t cut it, guys, but it’s a good placeholder until I figure out what does.”

The actress originally played Elektra in the 2003 “Daredevil” film, co-starring Ben Affleck, her then-husband. Garner’s character received her own film in 2005. Fans and celebrities alike showered Garner with praise in her Instagram comment section for her dedication and rigorous exercise routine.

Olivia Wilde commented, “You are such a f—ing badass.” Eva Longoria joined in with, “Wow!! This is amazing! But you cease to amaze me!” One fan amusingly noted, “You weight-lifting pumpkins is maybe the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Moreover, Garner’s fitness coach, Beth Nicely, praised her with encouragement, “You are the REAL DEAL Jennifer Garner. A true inspiration. Training you is the absolute BEST. I’m so proud of you!!!”
