Jennifer Lopez’s Relationships: A Timeline from Diddy to Ben Affleck

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have filed for divorce after two years of marriage.

After months of speculation surrounding the pair, the 55-year-old singer filed for divorce from Affleck, 52, on August 20. They had married in July 2022. The news was first reported by TMZ, which noted that Lopez filed the paperwork in Los Angeles County Superior Court and listed April 26, 2024, as the official date of separation. Notably, the Selena actor opted to represent herself in the legal proceedings.

“She tried really hard to make things work and is heartbroken,” a source told People. “The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.”

The couple first tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony on July 16, 2022. August 20 would have marked the second anniversary of their traditional wedding ceremony in Georgia, which is the same day Lopez filed for divorce.

The Georgia wedding took place on Affleck’s 87-acre compound near Savannah, with celebrity guests like his best friend Matt Damon in attendance. Podcaster and life coach Jay Shetty officiated the ceremony.

“Bennifer”, as they were called in the early 2000s, famously rekindled their romance in 2021, more than 17 years after they were first engaged. They had postponed their wedding in September 2003 and eventually broke up in January 2004. They stayed friends over the years, with both moving on to marry other people—Affleck with Jennifer Garner and Lopez with salsa singer Marc Anthony.

Lopez was married to Marc Anthony from 2004 to 2014, and they share twins Max and Emme, 16. Although they announced their split in 2011, their divorce was finalized in 2014. In a 2016 interview with W Magazine, Lopez revealed that she had known early on that her marriage to Anthony wasn’t right for her. “When my marriage ended, it was not easy to find forgiveness,” she recalled. “It wasn’t the dream that I had hoped for… But Marc is the father of my children, and that’s never going away. So I have to work to make things right. And that is, by far, the hardest work I do.”

Before Anthony, Lopez had two shorter marriages. She was first married to Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998. Soon after, she dated hip hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs for two years, splitting in 2001. That same year, she married Cris Judd, a dancer she met on set while filming her “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” music video. However, their marriage ended in June 2002, and the divorce was finalized in 2003.

“I can’t give you the answer as to why her relationships don’t work. I think that it’s work. It’s whether you want to work on it or not. Everyone has baggage and problems. It’s whether you want to deal with those problems,” Judd told Us Weekly at the time. “When you sign up to get married, you can’t just walk away.”

Before reuniting with Affleck, Lopez had an on-and-off relationship with backup dancer Casper Smart following her split from Anthony. They ended things for good in 2016, and she briefly dated Drake for a year before parting ways in February 2017.

That same month, she began dating former New York Yankees player Alex Rodriguez. They got engaged after two years of dating, but their wedding was postponed multiple times amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Eventually, they called off their engagement in 2021.

Lopez and Affleck reunited in May 2021, embarking on getaways to Montana and Miami. They announced their engagement in April 2022 and married in July of the same year.
