The American actor Johnny Depp has set his sights on an imposing historic castle valued at 4 million dollars which is located in Montalto Dora, Italy, according to local media. Depp, now 60 years old, has been focusing his personal life and film career mostly in Europe after he faced the famous 2022 defamation trial against Amber Heard, his ex-wife.
The renowned Hollywood star’s interest in this castle arose while he was directing a biopic about the artist Amedeo Modigliani which led him to visit this ancient fortress located in the hills of Mount Crovero in Turin, a detail that the newspaper shared Corriere delle Sera.
The fascination for Montalto Dora castle is not an isolated fact, since Riccardo Scamarcio, co-star with Al Pacino in the same biographical directed film, has been frequent in his visits to this place and, apparently, has introduced Depp to the possibility of acquiring it.
This castle, which is currently for sale, has gone through meticulous restoration processes that highlight its medieval and Gothic architecture. It has a space greater than 22,000 square feet, integrating 11 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, a paved patio and a 15th-century chapel, according to information from Il Messagero. Additionally, the property has a secondary castle and a farm.
Depp’s possible acquisition of the castle has raised some reservations in the local community. Renzo Galletto, mayor of Montaldo Dora, expressed concern, arguing that although a purchase by a public figure like Depp would draw attention to the area, it would not necessarily represent an adequate “economic synergy” for the community. In turn, he emphasized the cultural protection of the castle, highlighting that the residence is located under the custody of the Italian Cultural Heritage.
Montalto Dora is a small town with around 3,300 inhabitants, where the castle plays an important role as a “Site of Community Interest”, which brings with it specific regulations to follow. Galletto emphasized the complexity that any attempt at new construction inside or outside the castle would entail, given the numerous approvals and permits required.

Depp’s search for a new home coincides with the upcoming US release of Jeanne Du Barry, where he plays King Louis XV. The film was launched at Cannes last year, but will arrive in American theaters on May 2 after a long wait.
